A Worthy Calling
I was thinking today about what I would speak about at church if someone asked me to speak. I would probably speak about the exact same thing-the same person-that I spoke about 30 years ago. I was in Mexico, on a mission trip, and my audience was about 10 little girls at a pajama party. I spoke about Dorcas. You've probably never heard of her, and that is precisely why she is my favorite woman in the Bible. She wasn't famous, she wasn't even well-known, but she was FAITHFUL. You can find her story in Acts 9:26-32. Dorcas was known for her good deeds. It is speculated that she was a widow, as she lived in the port town of Joppa, where many men were lost at sea. She was dearly loved by the widows of the town who benefitted from her kindness and generosity. She was also beloved by the small church congregation that met in her house; so beloved, in fact, that when she died, two men from her home church went running to find the Apostle Peter and beg him to come and raise her, which he did. As a result of the miraculous raising of Dorcas, many in Joppa believed in Jesus. Dorcas is my favorite because she is so ordinary-not a big speaker, not famous, just a woman who was kind and generous to others, and was faithful to Jesus. Those are very worthy shoes to fill, and something to which every Christian should aspire.
